Curd, Galindo & Smith, LLP Announces that the Court Has Set a Trial Date In a Wrongful Death Case Against Los Angels County Sheriff’s Department

Court records show that the Los Angeles Superior Court judge overseeing the case entitled Land et al v Los Angels County LASC Case No.: 21STCV32725, has set a trial date of September 23, 2024.
The lawsuit filed by Alex Galindo of Curd Galindo & Smith, LLP Trial Lawyers on behalf of his clients (Michael Land, Marcus Land and Antwon Land) alleges that Los Angeles County sheriff deputies were negligently driving a patrol vehicle which ran-over and killed Karen Land, the mother of Mr. Galindo’s clients. The incident occurred in the morning of December 11, 2020. It was reported by local Fox station Ch. 11.
The court records indicate that on December 11, 2020, Karen Land who was wheelchair dependent was attempting to cross Imperial Highway near the crosswalk at Slater Street and Imperial Highway. Ms. Land was out of her wheelchair. The filed lawsuit alleges that various motorist noticed her and swerved to avoid her, other motorist stopped and then drove around her. Karen Land was knocked down onto Imperial Highway. The complaint alleges that motorists noticed that she was down on the roadway and they too swerved and avoided contact.
The lawsuit alleges that the two Los Angeles County sheriff deputies riding in their Los Angeles County Sheriff SUV were driving west bound Imperial Highway in excess of the posted 40 MPH speed limit. The sheriff deputies failed to notice that Karen Land was on the roadway and struck her. The court documents state that the SUV drove over Ms. Land’s body. Her head was struck by the front end of the patrol vehicle bumper. Ms. Land was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Plaintiffs, the sons of the decedent, Karen Land have demanded $10,000,000 as damages against the County. The trial is set to start on September 23, 2024 in the Los Angeles Superior Court.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has denied any liability. The County in its Court filings contends that the deputies could not avoid the impact due to the dark conditions and the speed of the patrol vehicle.
